HIPAA – Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 mandated significant changes in the legal and regulatory environments governing the provisions of health benefits, the delivery and payment of health care services, and the security and confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI).
At the same time, Congress recognized that advances in electronic technology could erode the privacy of health information. Consequently, Congress incorporated into HIPAA provisions that mandated the adoption of Federal privacy protections for individually identifiable health information.
PHI is defined as individually identifiable demographic information that relates to an individual’s past, present or future physical or mental health or condition. Camden County Partnership for Children is a fully HIPAA compliant agency committed to the protection of the children and families we serve.
The HIPAA Transaction and Code Set Rule standardized billing practices across the country to ensure consistency.
The HIPAA Security Rule defines standards, procedures and methods for the security of electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI).
